Dancing With The Light: A Photoshoot Narrative

On this photo shoot, I had the opportunity to work with Esther, a professional dancer from Spain based in NYC. We planned this shoot for a while, and I was excited to finally work with her! - Find Esther on IG as @roxie_harttt

One thing I like about working with creative people like Esther is how natural they behave in front of a camera. They are receptive to ideas and even bring their own suggestions. There's not much to ask for when you have a subject with a similar passion for creating.

Esther is someone I hope to work with again in the future. It would be awesome if that would be inside a studio. With her performing skills, Esther can convey different moods and expressions that lead to very compelling images.

So, now, let me focus on the tech stuff. On this shoot, Esther and I worked in midday, under sunlight which in some sequences, I overpowered with my portable strobe. In other segments, I photographed Esther with the sun facing her back and under filtered light from a tree nearby. By the way, with this shoot, I learned how portable lighting gear overheats under direct sunlight.

Strangely enough, Photo gear is just not that important to me anymore, so minimal gear is the way to go. It's gratifying to feel comfortable and liberated as I focus on the important stuff.

With my standard 50mm F1.4, a 17-40mm F.4, a battery-powered strobe, and a white umbrella, I had all I need to move around the park and keep engaged with the subject, giving us a variety of images that resonate on Esther's dancer's elegance.
